One-Page Week, Part 4

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Who says a one-page sketch has to be used for a one-page layout? The three projects today all took a one-page sketch and used it as inspiration for something else: a card, a frame, and a two-page layout.

One-page Sketch #3

You can download and print this sketch by clicking on the one-page sketches link found under the "printable sketches" tab on the right sidebar.

"Happy Birthday" robot card by Shari Thurman
Supply List - Pattern paper, Epoxy stickers, Glittered foam alphabet: Creative Imaginations; Ribbon: May Arts; Other: Machine stitching and cardstock

I love this 'Robots Rock' collection from Creative Imaginations. It seems that I never have enough birthday cards, especially for little boys. I knew this weeks sketch would be easy to adapt for a card.

My card is 6x6 and the center strip is roughly 2 1/2 inches. I probably would have made the strip larger, but I didn't want to cover up any of the robots and spaceships. I then stitched around the edges of the pattern paper. I moved the title onto the center strip in place of the suggested photos on the sketch and embellished with an epoxy robot. I finished it with gingham ribbon.

Inside sentiment could read "I hope you have blast!" or "You're out of the world!".

"Smile" Photo Frame by Tammy Tutterow
Supplies - frame: Creative Imaginations Bare Elements; patterned paper: Jillibean Soup (Pasta Fagioli Italian Seasoning, Jillibean Soup Patterned Paper on Kraft Chilled Strawberry Soup Collection, Whipped Cream); stickers: Jillibean Soup Cardstock Stickers (Chilled Strawberry Soup); elements: Jillibean Soup; Corrugated Shapes: Flowers, Jillibean Soup; Corrugated Alphas: Jillibean Soup, Blue (strip from border around alphas); Journal spot: Jillibean Soup Journaling Sprouts; fiber: Jillibean Soup Bean Stalks; brads: 7gypsies; ink: Vintage Photo Distress Ink

To create this photo frame, I adapted the sketch by omitting the individual photo blocks and using the frame opening instead for one photo area. I also widened the center band (the camera paper) so that there would be a full row of cameras above and below the photo opening. I really love this camera paper and wanted to include as much of it as I could.

Rather than add a title, I used a sticker with a phrase that I liked and combined all of the elements into one cluster.

I layered the sticker with a journaling spot, a corrugated flower, and another journaling spot to add extra dimension on the otherwise flat surface.

I trimmed a border strip from the corrugated alphabet and used it under a row of twine for the row of twine be more prominent and to help bring it off of the surface of the frame.

"Funny Faces by Drew and Stacey" by Allison Davis
Supplies - Cardstock: Bazzill; Patterned paper: Bella Blvd. and Fancy Pants; Corrugated Alphabets: Jillibean Soup; Word Stickers: Bella Blvd. and 7Gypsies; Alphabet Stickers: Bella Blvd.; Stickers: Bella Blvd.; Journaling sticker: October Afternoon; Embroidery floss: DMC

This one-page sketch is so easy to stretch to a two-page layout. I had more pictures, some of which I didn't want to crop to a 3 x 3, so extending the page into a two-page layout was the best solution for me.

Variation #1 - I decided to remove the background piece for my layout. I really wanted to add some colorful papers in the block/grid design of the page. The white really makes those colors and the pictures stand out. The great thing about background pieces is that you can easily remove them without altering anything else on the layout. Of course there will be situations where the design is reliant on the background but most often it's easy to remove.

Variation #2 - While I did have more pictures than the one-page sketch, I didn't quite have enough to cover a whole two-page layout as the pictures are on the sketch. This was a great opportunity for me to add in some colorful patterns in place of the pictures.

Variation #3 - I kept the title in the same general area as it is on the sketch. I had originally wanted to use some KI Memories Scribbles (loopy, glittered covered words) for my title but the white stickers on white cardstock just wasn't going to work. I made something similar by sketching out the "funny faces" title and the loopy ends with a pencil and then hand stitched along the design.

Variation #4 - Since I had several areas that were open and uncovered by pictures, I added three large words accented by word and heart stickers in three different areas on the page.

Funny Faces brought a smile to my face. Love the layout! Tammy's photo is frame is over the top. I am jumping to her blog because I bet she provided "how to" details. I think any little guy would love to get the card made by Shari.

Great samples...love the frame! The two page layout is my favorite though! Fun pics and I absolutely LOVE how you stitched the title! Allison, your stitches are always so even and neat...I don't think I could get anywhere near as nice a result as you do!

I love all three projects! The card is so cute and totally appropriate for a little guy. The frame is over the top with all the details! I love the two pager, I love two page layouts and am always scared to use white as my background so thanks for showing me how it can work!
