Card Week, Part 3

 •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
During the reveal of this sketch I had mentioned a few other elements you could use in place of the candles on the sketch. The three cards today show some of those other ideas. Even if the elements you want to use aren't the exact size, height, or even close to the same shape you can still use the sketch as a guideline. A general "rule" that I always keep in mind when I'm working with sketches is "If it's in the same general area as on the sketch, it's going to work."

Card Sketch #4

You can download and print this sketch by clicking on the card sketches link found under the "printable sketches" tab on the right sidebar.

"Home" card by Allison Davis
Supplies - Cardstock: Bazzill; Patterned paper: Nikki Sivils, Scrapbooker; Cut outs: Nikki Sivils, Scrapbooker; Embroidery floss: DMC

Variation #1 - In place of the striped strip on the sketch, I used a strip of green cardstock to use as grass in front of the houses. I used scissors to cut little slits along the top edge of the strip and then frayed them with my finger. To finish it I added hand stitching along the bottom.

The strip is down further on the card than on the sketch but that was necessary unless I wanted the grass across the front door of the houses.

Variation #2 - Instead of candles I used three houses, a tree, and a birdhouse. Even though there are fewer elements, if you look along the top they still somewhat follow the sketch with the varying heights.

Variation #3 - I changed the size of the card to accommodate the houses.

"Happy Birthday" card by Christy Arthur
Supplies - Cardstock: Bazzill (kraft); Patterned paper: Crate paper and October Afternoon

Description:

I took the idea of the strips of paper and layered several vertical strips together.

I wove some horizontal strips in between the vertical strips, which is different from the sketch.

I used a flower embellishment where the "message" is located on the sketch.

I added a little "smile" stamp to the top of the card.

"Happy Day" card by Allison Davis
Supplies - Cardstock: Bazzill; Patterned paper: Echo Park; Stickers: Echo Park; Alphabet stickers: Echo Park; Jewels: KaiserCraft; Embroidery floss: DMC

Variation #1 - I changed the size of my card so that I could fit both the branch and the birds. It would have worked on the suggested size on the sketch but it would have been a little too crammed.

Variation #2 - Instead of the striped strip, I made a branch out of patterned paper. To add some finishing touches to it, I added some leaf stickers, flower stickers, jewels, and hand stitching.

Variation #3 - In place of the candles I used the two birds. The left edge of the branch also helped to fill some of the space the candles do on the sketch.

Variation #4 - I didn't want to cover up too much of the branch so I moved the message of my card to the right of the birds.
