One-Page Week, Part 5 and a Sponsor Giveaway

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
It may be one-page week but it's going to be two-page day today. There are so many different ways to convert a one-page sketch into a two-page layout. Are you tired of me saying there are endless possibilities yet? Okay, I won't say it again. But it's so true. Read on to see three ways that we used a one-page sketch as inspiration for a two-page layout.

One-page Sketch #2

You can download and print this sketch by clicking on the one-page sketches link found under the "printable sketches" tab on the right sidebar.

"On the Farm" by Shari Thurman
Supplies - Pattern paper and stickers: Creative Imaginations; Ink: Colorbox Chalk Ink; Adhesive: Thermo-web 3D; Tools: Cricut- Old West; Other: cardstock, machine stitching, jute, brads

I typically create two-page layouts, but I really wanted to use this sketch. I had to figure out a way to get 9 pictures on a layout using this sketch. In order to make it work, I had to stretch the sketch and adjust the photo placement.

Since I shifted the sketch to the right, I adjusted the length of the paper strips to 5 inches instead of the suggested 4 inches, so that it would better fill the space. The photos seemed to be floating, so I added the 12x11 plaid background.

Instead of placing the title as the sketch shows, I replaced it with some embellishment stickers and moved the title to the next page.

I cut the title using the Cricut and added brads to give it the look of nails on a old fence. I also moved the journal spot to the right.

Instead of the long vertical strip of paper, I stitched the edged of the paper and added curled up jute to help carry the farm theme.

Journaling: "The petting zoo came to Mommy's Day Out the last day of school. They wore hats and overalls and looked so cute."

"A Tobin Sized Pumpkin" by Noey Hunt
Products used: Patterned papers: Imaginisce (words and brown with leaves), Cosmo Cricket (green with leaves), Sassafras Lass (owls), and Making Memories (cream with golden leaf); Journaling blocks: Jillibean Soup; Letters: Creative Memories ("a Tobin sized") and American Crafts Thickers ("pumpkin")

This started out as a pretty simplistic implementation of Allison's sketch, but then I added a second page.

Variation 1: I find that I take many of my photos in a vertical format instead of horizontal. Therefore I started by rotating Allison's sketch for my use.

Variation 2: (left page) The patterns that I chose are very detailed and I found that any further embellishments distracted the eye from the most important part of the layout - the photos. On this layout I used Allison's sketch for photo, patterned paper, and title placement but dropped any additional accents.

Variation 3: (right page) I mirror imaged the sketch to balance as a second page. I shortened the patterned paper strips to make more room for photos.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

"Mama's Little Boy" by Allison Davis
Supply list - Cardstock: Bazzill; Patterned paper: My Mind's Eye; Chipboard: My Mind's Eye; Stickers: My Mind's Eye; Pen: American Crafts; Embroidery floss: We R Memory Keepers and DMC

One of my favorite ways to turn a one-page sketch into a two-page layout is to create a mirror image of the sketch on the right page. Just like if you stamped the sketch onto the right page.

Variation #1 - Because I was creating a two-page layout I moved both sides in towards the center. I like to have everything grouped together and towards the center. This could very well be another OCD thing.

Variation #2 - While I did have double the photo area, I had even more photos I wanted to include on this layout. I decided to build my own block of photos instead of using the arrangement on the sketch. I kept the same measurement of the total photo block (6 x 10) on the left page, I just used a different arrangement, individual sizes, and orientation. On the left page I ended up having a slightly larger photo block (6 1/2 x 10). I really didn't want to crop down the column of wallet photos on the right and since it was only a 1/2" difference, it was barely noticeable.

Variation #3 - Since everything moved in an inch, I extended my patterned paper strips. I wanted to make sure I kept the 1" margin around the whole page to maintain balance. On the left page I cut 5" strips instead of 4" as suggested on the sketch. Because the photo block on the right was 1/2" bigger I used 4 1/2" strips.

Variation #4 - I decided to include only the striped strip on the left page and made it 1/2" instead of the suggested 1/4".

Variation #5 - I think banners are a fun element to add to a page so I added them in three different areas on the sketch.

Variation #6 - While the overall look of the right page is a mirror image of the left, I did change the strips a little. I arranged them as they are on the sketch on the left page. On the right page I flipped them from top to bottom.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

So there you have it! Three easy ways to use a one-page sketch for a two-page layout:

• Use the sketch as it is on one page and create your own design on the other page.
• Use the sketch one way on the first page and then rotate it for the other page.
• Use the sketch as it is on the left and then use the mirror image on the right.
