Add-on Sketch #6

You can download and print this sketch by clicking on the add-on sketches link found under the "printable sketches" tab on the right sidebar.

"You Are Entering The Splash Zone" by Carolyn Wolff
Supply List - Patterned Paper: Bo Bunny (Barefoot & Bliss); Cardstock: Bazzill; Stickers, rub-ons, chipboard, dimensional stickers: Bo Bunny (Barefoot & Bliss); Floss: DMC; Circle Punch: EK Success; Ink: Ranger Distress Ink, Vintage Photo; Mist: Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist

This add-on sketch was a bit of a challenge for me, but I am just thrilled with what I learned while using it. I will be pulling this one out again for sure!.

Here are my variations on the sketch:

Variation #1 – I followed the measurements that were given to us in the sketch directions. The challenge for me was what to do with it and how to incorporate it on something. I decided to use it as a border on a layout. I used a double page sketch from one of the Sketches for Scrapbooking books and just used one side of it to create a single page.

Variation #2 – After I was finished creating the border using the sketch, I added 1-inch punched circles and placed stickers in the center of them and place them in the center of the diamonds. I popped them up using foam adhesive.

Variation #3 – I am a big fan of using white for the background of my layouts. I think it really makes the colours in my papers and photos pop off the page. This time I used a spritz or two of Glimmer Mist to add a bit of interest to the white background. I am not sure that it will show up very well in the photo, but I am sure I will try a darker colour next time.

Variation #4 – I was working with rub-ons and decided to put one right on my photo. I chose a word that totally describes my son. He is the most relaxed person I know.

"It Takes Someone Special..." by Allison Davis
• as seen in Creating Keepsakes Magazine
Supplies - Cardstock: Bazzill; Patterned paper: BasicGrey and unknown; Alphabets: Doodlebug and American Crafts; Rubons: BasicGrey

This layout was actually created long before the argyle sketch was made but I thought it would be a good example of how you can use the sketch.

I created three large diamonds to frame the important elements on my layout. The first holds the title and the journaling and the other two are covered with pictures. Because I had important elements on the diamonds, I didn't stitch over the tops of them.

I love creating large shapes to frame a collage of pictures and this was by far the most challenging I've attempted yet.

How I create large shapes for collages of photos:
This will work for any shape including stars, hearts, circles, triangle, etc.

1. The first thing I do is make my large shape out of cardstock the size that I want my photo collage to be. I use this piece to actually adhere the photos onto. (To create the diamond shape you can still follow the instructions on the sketch, just use bigger measurements.)

2. I usually start by adhering a larger photo or two in the middle. You'll want to make sure that the photo either goes all the way to the edge of the shape or overlaps off the edge.

3. Then I start adding smaller photos in the spaces left around the larger photo(s). Again, you want to make sure that the photo either goes all the way to the edge or overlaps. If you end up with a small space that you are having difficulty filling with a photo add an embellishment to cover it.

4. The last step is to flip the shape to the back and trim the pictures that are overlapped off the edge of the shape.

Awesome job, Allison! I love how the argyle pattern creates frames within the layout.
