Two-Page Sketch #17

You can download and print this sketch by clicking on the two-page sketches link found under the "printable sketches" tab on the right sidebar.

"Butterfly Fair" by Jennifer Larson
Supplies - Patterned paper: My Little Shoebox, BoBunny, Fancy Pants, Making Memories, Crate Paper, October Afternoon, My Mind's Eye; Letter stickers: Bella Blvd, Crate Paper; Punches: EK Success, Martha Stewart; Floss: DMC; Pen: Zig; Ink: Stampin' Up!; Stamps: Studio Calico; Other: Machine Thread

1. The movement on the sketch reminded me of butterflies flying, which made me think of these photos I hadn't scrapped. I subbed out the stars for the butterflies.

2. To make the stitched curve, I drew a curved line, then punched holes 1/4 inch apart along. I hand stitched using 3 threads of DMC.

3. I added punched butterflies, some stamped, some not, along the curve and next to the title.

4. I selected olors that looked like Monarchs but were sort of masculine to make butterflies on a boy's page work.

"Red, White & Blue Birthdays" by Robbie Herring
Supplies Used - Patterned paper, stickers, die-cuts, chipboard, brads, and alphabet: Bo Bunny Liberty Collection; Alphabet: Jillibean soup alphabet (red) and October Afternoon alphabet (blue); Embroidery floss: DMC

Variation 1 - I changed the size of the square pictures to 3.5 x 3.5 inches instead of 4 x 4 inches. I also exchanged one of the squares for an additional 4x6 picture on the bottom right side.

TIP: Sometimes a picture that is a bit busy can have a tendency to disappear on patterned paper. Adding a white border can help highlight the pictures better. I also like to pop up pictures a bit in this instance. I added two layers of cardstock underneath the pictures to further highlight them.

Variation 2 - Instead of using only the 4 ½ x 12 inch vertical strip, I also added a 2 ½ x 12 vertical strip to the right piece of paper. I also added more borders to the entire center design.

Variation 3 - I changed the embellishment placement a bit and instead of doing my journaling directly onto the star design, I used journaling strips.

"Canada Day in Kanata" by Jill Sarginson
Supplies Used - Cardstock: Bazzill Basics; Patterned Paper: Jillibean Soup, Pink Paislee, Scenic Route; Letters: American Crafts; Tools: Fiskars Scallop Sentiment border punch, Martha Stewart maple leaf punch, Creative Memories circle cutting system; Ink: Vibrance; Templates: Maple Leaf (from google images); Journaling: Computer generated (Tahoma font); Adhesive: pop dots

Most of my layouts are matted so because of this, I often change my photo sizes. I opted to go 3.5 x 5 for the main photo, the photos on the right side are 3 x 3. and the smaller photos on the left are 1.5 x 3 each. I decided to lower the photo at the very left of the page as those four photos were all the same theme. This gave me some extra room for my title so I matted it on a circle.

For this layout, I used maple leafs instead of stars. The maple leaf was found on google images - I copied and pasted it into my image editing program (PSE), blew it up, printed and cut it out and then used it as a template. The small maple leafs were punched out using the maple leaf punch by Martha Stewart. The smaller maple leafs were all inked and pop dotted to help them stand out.

"Another Fun Day at the Zoo" by Christine Chain
Supplies - (all from my Green Tangerines June kit) letter stickers: Lush by My Mind's Eye and Echo Park; Chipboard buttons: Graphic 45; Word Stickers: Echo Park; Patterned Paper: Crate Paper; Journaling block and ribbon: unkonwn; Punch: EK Success; Decorative Brads: Stella Rose by My Mind's Eye

My original plan was to stick with the sketch and do something for the Fourth of July. And then I went through my photos and realized I hadn't scrapped our zoo pictures from April!

1) As you can see, I didn't use stars! I had this cute journaling block in my GTKC kit that I was planning on mounting on something. But no matter what I put under it, I liked it by itself more. Plus the block itself kind of stands in for the large star.

2) I substituted these cute buttons for the star border. Originally they were just a place holder so I could see if I liked the swoosh of stars going over my photo on the right, and then I realized I really liked the buttons. And they have a few clock ones to go with the clock on the journaling block. Yay!

After getting the buttons stitched on and my pages almost done, I decided they needed a little extra something. So snipped the legs off of a few brads and glued them down. I love the extra bit of color and bling.

3) Instead of a scalloped border next to striped paper, I used "torn notebook paper" punch and some ribbon from my kit. The scalloped edge didn't fit the look I was going for, and with all the circles I thought the scallops would be too round.

The layouts all look awesome today. I like the way you can make the swirl across the page be anything you want. What a great variety in the swirls. Way to go ladies.
