I decided to use a picture taken of my son on his 7th birthday and incorporate an interview with him for my journaling. The questions came from Cathy Zielske’s Story Guide Layered Template #1 available from Designer Digitals.


Variation #1 – I didn’t use anywhere near as many embellishments! I wanted this layout to be a bit more “clean and simple” since it’s about my son. Not that a layout about a boy can’t have embellishments, but I really liked how it looked without much extra.

Variation #2 – I used a few label and word stickers, plus a “7” (since this is when Brandon turned seven) in place of the flower/button embellishments.

Variation #1 - I had a bunch of small photos, more than for one page, so I stretched the sketch into a two-page 8.5x11 layout. Aside from that, I kept the design almost identical to the sketch.

“Lingering at the Falls” by Sue Althouse

Any sketch with banners and the opportunity to use a variety of patterned paper is a winner in my book!


Variation #1 - Ran the title down onto the side of the photo.

Variation #2 - Used spray ink on the background.

Variation #3 - Added patterned paper strips on three edges of the cardstock.

Variation #1 - I used less and smaller embellishments than suggested on the sketch with the exception of the one on the top left corner of the photo.
