One-Page Week, Part 4 and a Giveaway

 ••••••••••••••••••••••••••
While this sketch already has a background (the 11 x 7" rectangle) there is still a lot of space open to add even more of a background or design. You can make it bigger, add more, use a pattern behind it, or even remove it.

The four layouts today show some different ways you can play around with the background.

One-page Sketch #4

You can download and print this sketch by clicking on the one-page sketches link found under the "printable sketches" tab on the right sidebar.

"Thanksgiving" by Suzanna Lee
Supplies - Cardstock: Core'dinations and Bazill; Patterned paper: BoBunny, Basic Grey, and Cosmo Cricket; Alphabet stickers: Basic Grey; Punch: EK Success; Buttons: Favorite Findings

Variations:

I used extra mats behind both the main piece with the 4 x 6 picture and the background itself just to pop them a little bit. I also used small punched edges alongside the vertical strips for some extra pizazz. The main background piece is some Core'dinations cardstock that I sanded to give an extra splash of color. I also used small labels for journal spots to label each dish instead of the three down and the bottom. I also chose not to journal, what more does one need to say about food?! LOL!!

"You Are My Sunshine" by Shari Thurman
Supply List - Pattern paper, Element stickers, Journal Cards: Echo Park Paper; Other: machine stitching

I love how sweet Cooper looks loving on his Meme after a nap. On almost a daily basis we hear, "I need some lovin'."

I stayed true to the sketch, but I did add some layers. To the background I added a large pattern, but tried to balance the busy pattern by using it with solid papers. I omitted one of the 3 x 3" photos and replaced it with a journaling card. I then stitched along the photos.

"We Are That Family" by Christy Arthur
Products - Cardstock: Bazzill; Patterned paper: Crate Paper; Fabric paper and pen: American Crafts; Mists: Tatterned Angels and Studio Calico; Stamps: Tim Holtz and Studio Calico; Fabrips: Studio Calico; Alphabet stickers: October Afternoon

Description: I love these pictures of our family, normal and crazy, with the self timer at Chuck E Cheese. I also loved the silly upside down photo of the girls in the roller coaster ride, it is what they do a lot right now! So, when I saw the sketch that had several pictures in a line, it seemed perfect.

• I used three 4 x 6 photos instead of the four 3 x 3 photos in the sketch.

• I used several strips of fabric paper to layer for the background instead of using one page of patterned paper.

• I used a stamp on top of the fabric paper instead of the additional 4x6 photo.

• I moved the clouds to the left side.

I misted a negative image of the cloud and then layered the clouds I misted on top of each other. I then stamped the stitch stamp on top.

• I added several small strips of paper to the bottom left and right below the stamped date.

• I moved the journaling to the middle instead of towards the top.

"Caught Red Handed" by Allison Davis
Supplies - Cardstock: Bazzill; Patterned paper: My Mind's Eye; Alphabets: American Crafts (red handed) and Prima (caught); Border punches: EK Success and Fiskars; Stickers: Creative Imaginations; Paint: Making Memories; Embroidery floss: DMC

Jackson coloring on things he shouldn't is a common event in our household and this story is one that I wanted to make sure I got on a page. When Jackson told us, "I not do it. Drew do it." we were laughing hysterically. He's just not old enough yet to put together the fact that he was literally caught red handed.

Variation #1 - The biggest change I made to the page is the background. Instead of using the 11 x 7 rectangle, I used a die cut paper. It is quite a bit larger than the suggested piece on the sketch but since it's a background, there were no adjustments needed to anything else.

With so many companies making die cut patterned papers, using them in place of a background on a sketch is so easy. It's a time saver and with the decorative edges it can add an eye catching detail that a simple square or rectangle might not do.

Variation #2 - The pictures that I had to use on this layout just weren't going to work as 3 x 3. If I had printed 4 x 6 photos and tried to crop them I would have been cutting out too much of the picture. My solution was to use wallet size photos cut to 3 x 2 1/2".

Variation #3journaling for this layout so I moved it to fill in the space left in between the pictures on the right. I only had three supporting photos for this layout so it worked out perfectly. Love it when things work out like that!

Variation #4 - To go with the "Caught Red Handed" theme I painted Jackson's hand and stamped it onto cardstock. He loved this part! (Plus maybe it helped to teach him that it's fun and Mommy is happy when you do this on paper. Not so much on the walls.)

I cut out the hand print and used it in place of the sun and clouds on the sketch. It was a lot bigger than I thought it was going to be so I tucked some of it under the 6 x 4 photo.

Variation #5 - I used a small 1/4" strip on the right of the picture instead of the 1/2" strip and then used a border punch on the left side. I also added an extra striped strip to the left.

Variation #6 - I used a combination of a border sticker with the word "caution" on it, a scallop strip, and a 1/4" striped strip along the bottom instead of the 1/2" striped strip.

The layouts are great.

We discussed the antics of Jackson at the weekend retreat so I was especially excited to see the layout. I love the paper (same as in our class).

Allison, I have the same title with the same hand on a layout of my little one, but she was caught red handed with her hand in the cookie/candy jar with chocolate everywhere. She was too young to talk yet but it was hilarious and something I wanted to remember!
