Card Week, Part 6 - Guest Designer, Samantha Taylor

••••••••••••••••
Today we've got two great cards from our talented guest designer, Samantha Taylor and some cute Christmas projects from Cooper, Hayden, and Jackson, sons of creative team member Shari Thurman.

Card Sketch #14

You can download and print this sketch by clicking on the card sketches link found under the "printable sketches" tab on the right sidebar.

"Celebrate the Season" by Samantha Taylor
Supplies Used - Cardstock: Jillibean Soup (Kraft cardstock); Patterned Paper and stickers: Echo Park (Season's Greetings Collection Pack); Ribbon: May Arts (burlap trunk), Maya Road (green pleated); Pearls: Basic Grey

Variation 1: I like to layer, so I added an extra layer between the card base and the decorative edge background.

Variation 2: I used pleated ribbon to create my Christmas tree.

• To make this tree yourself, first cut the tree from card stock.

• Cover the card stock in a strong adhesive (I used scor-tape).

• Work from the bottom up, layering ribbon. I did not overlap the layers of my ribbon, but butted the edges up to each other.

• I cut my strips slightly longer than the edge, and then trimmed the ribbon to the edge of the card stock base when I had finished.

• Use a strong adhesive to attach your tree to your card base.

Variation 3: I added pearls to the tree.

"Joy" by Samantha Taylor
Supplies Used - Cardstock: Jillibean Soup (Kraft); Patterned Paper and stickers: Echo Park (Season's Greetings Collection Pack; Rhinestones: Imaginisce I-rock tool and glam rocks

For me, creating Christmas cards is all about making something simple, so I stuck quite closely to the sketch.

Variation 1: I like to layer, so I added an extra layer between the card base and the decorative edge background

Variation 2: I put pop dots under the decorate edge layer.

Variation 3: I used a sticker instead of creating my own Christmas tree.

I got an email yesterday from creative team member Shari Thurman with a photo of the projects that her boys had made, one of which follows the tree on the card sketch. We did a "Sketches for All Ages" feature earlier this year and shared how kids can use the sketches too. It was so fun to see how their creativity mixed with the sketch and the kids all enjoyed having a little guide to help them. I highly recommend if you've got a little one that likes to create, give them a sketch and let them have a go at it!

I couldn't resist sharing these cute projects! They are so cute and Cooper did an awesome job using the tree on the card sketch!

small Christmas trees by Jackson Thurman, age 3
big Christmas tree (based on Card Sketch #14) by Cooper Thurman, age 4
gingerbread man by Hayden Thurman, age 6

Here's what Shari had to say about their Christmas projects:

I wanted to show you the Christmas tree Cooper (4) made using using your card sketch. His teacher gave us a sheet of Green construction paper and told us to make a tree and decorate it. It was so easy for him using your sketch.

Hayden (6) decorated the Ginderbread man. He insisted on making a shirt for him. I didn't tell him he looked like an escaped convict. Jackson (3) didn't have a project to work on, so I cut a tree from the scraps and handed him a sheet of jewels. That kept him busy for about half an hour. I'm getting better letting my kids use my scrapbook stash. They had so much fun getting to play with my scrapbook supplies.

I love all your projects and ideas for the kids. It's so nice to see what kids create and they are so proud when they finish a craft.

I think all your kids did an awesome job and hope you tell them that.

When my girls were 4 & 5 we did those small trees and jewels on them and I still have them 10 years later. Will have to do this again with them even though they are much older now. Love that you shared these.

I'm loving this weeks add on and wish it wasn't over. Everyone did so many great things with it.

Samantha - What a beautiful take on this sketch. I love your ribbon tree and the bling on the second card is gorgeous too. Great job.

Shari - How cute are these. I miss the days when my kids used to craft with me. They are 15, 17 and almost 20 now. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Enjoy this time with your kids.

Samantha's cards are beautiful. Love the way she used the pleated ribbon. And so neat that Shari's children love to create. Sometimes it gets a little hard to allow the children into our stash, but it's so good for them to experiment with creating art.

Love Samantha's cards - one so detailed; one so simple - both lovely! Shari's kids did such a great job on their Christmas projects!

Inspired by the post this past year where Drew and some of the creative team's kids used a sketch to create a scrapbook page, I assisted my grandkids (ages 4, 8 and 11) in making a 12x12 scrapbook page from a sketch. I precut for the younger ones, letting them choose photos, embellishments and stick it all down. The older two journaled, the youngest dictated his journalling. These pages turned out amazingly well and are in my scrapbook. These pages probably will be more cherished than the best pages I can make! Also I got 3 pages done in less than 30 minutes!
