Add-on Week, Part 6 - Guest Designer

Our guest designer, Jennifer DeWolfe, has made an adorable project with the add-on sketch to share with you today. It takes the umbrella sketch to a whole new level!

Add-on Sketch #4

You can download and print this sketch by clicking on the add-on sketches link found under the "printable sketches" tab on the right sidebar.

"April Showers Bring May Flowers" by Jennifer DeWolfe

Supplies UsedCardstock: Bazzils (White); Patterned Papers: Basic Grey (Urban Prairie 12x12 Paper Pad); Alphas: American Crafts Thickers (Pink and Aqua), Cosmo Cricket Tiny Type (Yellow); Embellishments: White Felt, Embroidery Floss, Tulle (White), and Ribbon (Pink and Yellow)

I like to decorate my house to reflect the seasons. I don’t go Griswold overboard but a couple of things here and there is what I like to do. When I saw this Add On Sketch, I instantly knew I wanted to use it to create some springy decorations for my house and that is what led to this cute little mobile.

Variation #1: I changed the size of the umbrella from 3” to 4.5” as I wanted it to be a little bit bigger.

Variation #2: I wanted the umbrella to be 3D so I cut the same umbrella out in 4 different patterns. I took each of the patterns and folded them in half (pattern side to pattern side) and then adhered all of them together.

Variation #3: For the umbrella handle I used a pink ribbon which I snuck in between the umbrella layers before I finished gluing and knotted the top to look like the top point on the umbrella and the bottom to look like the end of the handle.

For the assembly of the mobile it was really quite simple. I took an embroidery hoop and painted it white. I tied the three umbrellas to the hoop using embroidery thread and then added some rain drops on embroidery thread in between at different lengths. Next I took some tulle and tied it to the top making a peak with a tail to attach to a ceiling mount. I covered up the knot at the center with a big yellow bow. I then took a piece of felt and cut out a cloud design on one edge and used this to wrap all the way around the outside of the hoop. This covered up all the embroidery floss knots and the clouds looked too cute.

And, finally, I cut out some 4” clouds out of white cardstock and then added my Spring saying and stitched it to the center knot (the one I covered with the yellow bow). And there it is, a really cute spring decoration!

I'm totally speecless, this is simply amazing, really can't find the words to tell you. AMAZING THAT YOU GOT THIS FROM JUST AN UMBRELLA!!
But please do me a favor, if you live in Ohio take it down now and make a sunshine one. It is raining and cloudy everyday and this isn't the spring weather I was hoping for after the brutal winter we just had. I need some SUNSHINE please, lol. Congratulations on taking off with this idea, you did a great job.

This is fantastic! I've tried to make Mobiles before, how do you get them to stay level and not lean to one side? Great job thinking "outside the box" on this one!
